With zombies, humans run and photographers follow us around. We have had the privilege of having Lance Shuey document the Des Moines Zombie Walk since the first year. He’s followed us and took amazing photos of the event as it unfolds. Check out what you may have missed the 2009 gallery and the 2010 gallery. We had the chance to sit down and talk zombies, photography and the upcoming walk with Lance in the below video. Check it out.

Make sure you watch for Lance at this years Third Annual Des Moines Zombie Walk. Lance will be there taking photos of everyone he can! Thinking about a fun Christmas card? Good, all the proceeds that Lance brings in will go to our charity, Central Iowa Shelter & Services. So get your photo taken! We want to see the photos after the walk!

Make sure you check out Lance Shuey Photography on Facebook, follow him on Twitter @Lance_Shuey, and check out his photography on his website.

Zombies Can Make A Difference

Posted: September 30, 2011 in Uncategorized

As most of you know, we are fast approaching our Third Annual Des Moines Zombie Walk. From the first walk in 2009, we wanted to get behind a cause as a way to bring the community together for the greater good. We have been able to raise clothing, hygiene products and medicine that all benefit Central Iowa Shelter & Services and those within. Here is how you can donate and see what they need this year. (Once you click the link, scroll down for a list of items on their top needs)

There is no cost to join us on October 1st at the Des Moines Zombie Walk. We have asked in 2009, 2010 and again this year for donations. We have had an overwhelming amount of success the past two years. This year we would like to exceed the past two years combined. The Des Moines Zombie Walk exists to be a family friendly, free, and fun event that has a community aspect. We encourage you to get involved and help your community.

Make sure you reach out and show your support to Central Iowa Shelter & Services. Check them out on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

The Blood Station

Posted: September 29, 2011 in Uncategorized

For this year’s Third Annual Des Moines Zombie Walk, we are adding a blood station. We want to be respectful to Brenton Skating Plaza as they are donating the use of their facility at no cost to us. We do need to remember to keep it clean and make sure it’s well taken care of while we are there.

So this year we are adding a blood station. This will be a designated area just outside the plaza, in the grass, where you can apply all the fake blood you want. We want to try and keep this blood off the city streets and sidewalks as best we can. We also want to keep the plaza clean and blood free. Please help us keep Des Moines clean, and apply your blood in the designated area. Feel free to help people find the blood station. It will be marked for everyone to find. Thank you all in advance for your help! We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday!

With the Third Annual Des Moines Zombie Walk just days away, we are in final preparations to insure an amazing walk. So far, we have over 750 people attending, far surpassing last year’s total.

New to the event this year, we will have a registration table. We need everyone who plans to walk and participate this year to register. Please arrive early!! It will take some time for everyone to get registered before we can start the walk at 2PM. Think about arriving about noon or 1PM to give yourself plenty of time, and to hang out with your fellow zombies!

You can fill out the registration form and print it out, if you like. This will shorten the waiting process for everyone. Zombie Walk RELEASE OF LIABILITY

Zombie Burger + Drink Lab is sponsoring The Third Annual Des Moines Zombie Walk on Saturday, October 1st in support of Central Iowa Shelter & Services.

Zombie Burger opened in August of this year and features a quick service counter for meals on-the-go and a drink lab that offers full-service meals, cocktails, and famous spiked milkshakes.  The restaurant, located at 300 E. Grand Avenue, is open seven days a week from 11am to midnight and has seating for over 100 customers on its outdoor patio in addition to its indoor counter and drink lab.  The restaurant’s interior décor pays homage to zombies in pop culture and features custom murals of zombie hordes attacking Des Moines.

This year Zombie Burger will host the Des Moines Zombie Walk’s official after-party and will donate 10 percent of their sales to Central Iowa Shelter & Services.  The Zombie Walk will unleash hordes of the undead upon Des Moines starting at the Brenton Skating Plaza at 2pm on October 1st.  The participants will shuffle through the Court Avenue District, pose for a photo at the state capitol, and end the night at Zombie Burger where they can enjoy food and drinks in their zombie costumes.

What will you have at Zombie Burger? Please peruse the menu! To learn more about Zombie Burger+ Drink Lab check out their Facebook page and their Twitter profile @ZombieBurgerDM.

Des Moines Derby Dames Support CISS

Posted: September 22, 2011 in Uncategorized

The Des Moines Derby Dames are showing their support for Central Iowa Shelter & Services by sponsoring the upcoming Third Annual Des Moines Zombie Walk on Saturday, October 1st.

The Des Moines Derby Dames is Des Moines’ premier roller derby league and is comprised of smart, savvy women from all walks of life, from young professionals, to urban hipsters, to soccer moms.  These women share a passion for roller derby and the athleticism, integrity, sportsmanship, and community it represents.  There are two teams in the league, the Derby Dames and Crash Test Dolls, and their home bouts are played at the 7 Flags Event Center in Clive.

This Saturday, September 24, the Crash Test Dolls will face off in a home bout against the Oskaloosa Roller Girls at 7pm.  The Dames will be donating a portion of the proceeds from their ticket sales to Central Iowa Shelter & Services and asking their fans to collect the Shelter’s top needs items to benefit the Des Moines Zombie Walk.  The Zombie Walk will unleash hordes of the undead upon Des Moines starting at the Brenton Skating Plaza at 2pm on October 1st.  All donations at the event, proceeds from raffle ticket sales, and profits from merchandise sales will go to CISS.

The Ghouls of Order

Posted: September 20, 2011 in Uncategorized

We have assembled a team for the Des Moines Zombie Walk for 2011. This has allowed us to do much more, because we have some amazing people helping out, working hard, and getting everyone excited for October 1st. The Des Moines Zombie Walk has grown each year, from 125 people in 2009 to over 330 people in 2010. With the numbers of people increasing, we want to be careful to make sure everyone is being safe and having fun. The city and residents have been very supportive with our walk over the past two years. We would like to keep it that way, and be able to continue to do it every year.

We have put together the Ghouls of Order as things we all need to think about and remind ourselves while we walk. Don’t think of them as rules, but more codes of conduct. We have to be respectful to one another, property and the city. If we come together and keep one another accountable, we shouldn’t anticipate any problems. Help your fellow zombies remember that this is a family friendly event for charity. We are all here to be covered in blood, search for brains and have a good time! Let’s make sure we keep it that way.

A huge thank you to Gary and Erin in their forward thinking in putting these together.
